The upcoming fifth season of MultiVersus is slated to be the final chapter for this crossover fighting game. Warner Bros. Games recently revealed that they’re wrapping up development, with the game’s servers going offline on May 30, coinciding with the close of the new season.
While the online modes will be shuttered, MultiVersus will stay accessible offline, allowing players to enjoy local matches or take on AI opponents. However, as of May 30 at 9 a.m. PDT, the game will no longer be available for digital download. To prepare for this transition, Warner Bros. Games has also halted all real-money transactions, meaning the in-game currency, Gleamium, is no longer for sale.
Season 5 has a couple of new surprises, introducing two fresh faces to its lineup: Aquaman from the DC universe and Looney Tunes’ Lola Bunny. Warner Bros. Games assures fans that players can unlock these characters through gameplay, without spending extra money. The final season kicks off on February 4 and promises to add a bit more excitement before the game’s sunset.
Expressing gratitude, Warner Bros. Games conveyed in a heartfelt message their thanks to everyone who supported MultiVersus. “All of us on the Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games teams have poured our heart and soul into this game. We will be forever grateful for the incredible support of the MultiVersus community throughout this journey,” they stated.
Initially launched in July 2022 as an open beta, MultiVersus saw a promising start. However, almost a year later, the team took the game offline to refine the netcode, improve matchmaking, and overhaul the progression system. Alongside these tweaks, they also worked on introducing new characters, maps, and game modes. When MultiVersus returned in May 2024, it came back with multiple updates and additions, though not all changes resonated with the audience, as seen in some declining interest metrics from Steam Charts and Twitch views.
By the end of season 5, players can look forward to a roster boasting 35 characters from various iconic franchises across film, television, and comics. This includes familiar faces like Batman, Superman, Scooby-Doo’s Shaggy and Velma, and Rick and Morty, to name a few. Since its 2024 relaunch, the game has also expanded its lineup with notable additions such as Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th, Agent Smith from The Matrix, the Powerpuff Girls, and Beetlejuice.
Even as it winds down, MultiVersus remains free to play and can be downloaded on a variety of platforms including PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. Whether you’re revisiting your favorite characters or trying the newcomers, it’s a final chance to savor the game’s unique blend of worlds.
