How many game genres can you mix into one experience before it becomes too much? Three? Four? Actually, you can blend as many as you want, provided the result is captivating and fresh. Based on my first impressions of Darfall, an upcoming game that combines elements of real-time strategy (RTS), city-building, RPG, and horde-battling adventure, it’s hitting the mark perfectly. The demo available on Steam left me impressed, and backed by Paradox, this strategy game is just around the corner with its release date now set in stone.
Darfall defies easy categorization, offering two distinct playstyles linked to its day-night cycle. During daytime, you’ll focus on building a thriving settlement, managing citizens, and venturing out for resources and loot. Come nightfall, however, the atmosphere shifts dramatically as zombified creatures rise to attack your settlement. Your task is to strengthen and protect your defenses, mastering your character’s combat abilities to fend off assaults and ensure your community survives to see another day.
The game also lets you choose from a range of heroes, each offering different skills and approaches. Whether you opt for Ardan, the wizard wielding powerful spells, or Nariel, the archer with a knack for commanding animals, your success hinges on leveraging their unique strengths. As you progress, collecting artifacts can further boost your hero’s powers.
Visually and thematically, Darfall draws inspiration from numerous sources. While set in a fantasy world, the nightly face-offs against escalating hordes of undead give it a distinct zombie-game flavor. Its low-poly art style adds another layer of uniqueness, distinguishing it from other strategy games on the market today.
In conjunction with a new trailer revealing the game’s backstory and setting the stage for its narrative, SquareNite, alongside publisher Paradox Arc, has announced when we can dive into Darfall.
Mark your calendars for Thursday, May 8, as the official launch day. In the meantime, if you’re eager to get a head start, you can try out the Steam demo. Simply head to Darfall’s Steam page to download it, wishlist the game, or find more information.
