The Lunar Remastered Collection is now available for Xbox One and is also compatible with the Xbox Series X|S. In celebration of its launch, I had the opportunity to sit with Amy Nguyen, the Senior Graphic Designer at GungHo America. We dove deep into the creation of the collection’s logo, exploring her creative process, inspirations, and the essence that she aimed to capture in the design.
Kicking off our conversation, Amy was kind enough to share her artistic journey. She’s been involved in a variety of interesting projects at GungHo. From crafting assets for competitive gaming tournaments to collaborating on major IPs, she’s had a colorful career. Her biggest milestone came with the Grandia console port in 2024, where she held the role of creative lead for the first time.
When the task of designing the Lunar logo came her way, Amy felt both thrilled and a bit overwhelmed. Creating a logo that not only represents the game’s identity but also resonates with long-time fans was no small feat. Amy recalls taking a varied approach—trying out different styles and then refining them based on feedback until they arrived at the final design.
In her creation process, Amy did consider previous Lunar logos. She immersed herself in research, intent on preserving the beloved brand image. Her design journey was a comprehensive one, going through many trials. Eventually, they chose a design that retained the iconic red of Lunar, enhanced with a radiant inner glow and sophisticated gold accents to highlight the remastering touch.
When asked about her inspiration for the different logo drafts, Amy explained how she aimed to maintain the nostalgic essence while indicating an upgrade. The sketches served as a playground of ideas, each exploring unique combinations of colors and elements, like the dragon sword and other signature visuals from the series. The final design was a harmonious blend of these explorations.
Discussing specifics of the logo, Amy pointed out the elongated tail of the ‘R’ in “Remastered,” a subtle nod to the original branding. She played with font serifs to give certain letters in “Remastered Collection” an added flair.
The talents of the original game artist, Toshiyuki Kubooka, contributed significantly to the collection’s visual packaging. Amy was impressed by the artistry in the newly rendered visuals which offered a fresh take while respecting the franchise’s roots. Designing the front cover was straightforward, as the new artwork seamlessly integrated into the layout, with only minor adjustments needed.
As for the back cover, Amy had more creative freedom and chose to infuse it with a nostalgic touch by incorporating pixel sprites, reminiscent of the classic gaming era. She carefully selected screenshots to offer a comprehensive glimpse of the game contents, ensuring all elements stayed true to the remastered theme.
What she cherishes most about this design project is the collaborative spirit it fostered. Working alongside industry veteran Mr. Kubooka, along with support from GungHo’s and Game Arts’ teams, helped bring together a project that reflects a shared dedication to honoring the beloved Lunar franchise.
