Current Mission: Face Godzilla and survive!
These days, my relationship with Fortnite is pretty complicated. It’s a far cry from what it was during its thrilling first year. Back then, the game was both unpredictable and hilarious, pitting both seasoned and new players against each other in a delightful chaos. Now, much of that excitement has dried up. What once felt like an invigorating challenge now feels like lazing around in a lukewarm bath, where opponents are mostly bots delivering lackluster attacks and practically handing you victory on a platter.
What also seems lost is the game’s once dreamlike thread of mystery and intrigue—a story that welcomed interpretation. Now it feels bogged down with standard MMORPG-style missions and overly talkative characters laying out generic video game backstory. Meanwhile, each week new characters from the crowded world of popular “intellectual properties” (yawn) hit the market, eroding whatever unique charm Fortnite once boasted. It’s as if we’ve landed in a corporate version of Ready Player One’s dystopia.
Despite all this, Fortnite’s magnetism is hard to resist. The game still offers a tactile experience like no other—where you feel every inch of terrain, and moving across its map by running, sliding, or leaping is a sheer joy. On particularly tough days, I still find myself logging in to breezily complete three daily quests, soaking up some easy XP in the process. And oh, the spectacle—there are moments Fortnite manages to pull off audacious stunts on a scale that few others dare to match.
Right now is one of those times. Enter Godzilla, the king of the monsters, who might just drop into any given match. I caught a clip online showing what it’s like to play as this colossal creature, and it looks jaw-droppingly awesome. The sheer scale and rampant power he has seems to fit perfectly. Frankly, I anticipate spending more time in Fortnite this weekend than I usually would, all in the hopes of witnessing that massive destructive power from the vulnerable perspective of a tiny human, sprinting for dear life from a real threat. So, if you’re also diving into Fortnite this weekend and happen to morph into Godzilla, and you notice me scurrying around below like an insignificant speck, go easy on me. I come in peace! — Carolyn Petit
