In 2022, PlayStation Plus Essential members were introduced to a game that has now become free for everyone, even those without subscriptions. From the creative minds behind Friday the 13th: The Game comes Arcadegeddon, a cooperative multiplayer shooter that debuted as one of the monthly offerings years ago and has since transitioned to a free-to-play model.
Earlier this year, in March, Arcadegeddon shifted to a free-to-play format, but it seems this change slipped under most people’s radars. It’s understandable why Arcadegeddon might not be at the forefront of gamers’ minds, especially when compared to Illfonic’s more notable titles like Friday the 13th and Predator: Hunting Grounds.
The switch to free-to-play mode was quietly shared on social media platform X, but even we didn’t catch wind of it until discussions popped up on the PS Plus subreddit. It seems like the news didn’t make much of a splash at the time.
Some PlayStation Plus members find themselves a bit annoyed with this revelation. Arcadegeddon was initially touted as a premium PS Plus game, only to follow the same path as Square Enix’s Foamstars, also moving to a free-to-play format. However, it’s worth noting there was a considerable three-year stretch between its PS Plus debut and this change, so unless someone made a purchase just before the switch, there might not be much cause for complaint.
Arcadegeddon certainly isn’t the first, nor will it be the last PS Plus title to embrace free-to-play status.
If you’re scouting for a new game to dive into this weekend, Arcadegeddon might be worth your time. After you’ve given it a go, we’d love to hear your thoughts.
