Intel has finally taken a serious approach to address the performance issues plaguing their Arc GPUs, particularly with older CPUs, and has begun an investigation to tackle the problem.
## Intel Addresses Arc GPU Performance Concerns with Older Ryzen and Intel Core Processors ##
At first glance, the Intel Arc B580 and B570 GPUs seemed promising when they were launched, boasting more VRAM than some of their competitors. However, they failed to make a significant impact on the performance charts. One key reason people shied away from the Battlemage GPUs lies in mediocre optimizations.
The problem isn’t just about Intel’s GPU drivers but a deeper issue that has kept Arc Battlemage GPUs from shining against their rivals. For those keeping track, Hardware Unboxed was one of the quickest to highlight the substantial performance dip of the Arc B580 when paired with older CPUs, such as those from the Ryzen 2000 series and Intel’s own 9th Gen processors.
Though it took some time, Intel has finally acknowledged the problem. They addressed users’ concerns on their forums with the following statement:
> “Thank you for your patience. We are aware of reports of performance sensitivity in some games when paired with older generation processors. We have increased our platform coverage to include more configurations in our validation process, and we are continuing to investigate optimizations.”
From this statement, it seems Intel was aware of the issue but hadn’t prioritized optimizing performance. They’re now planning to extend optimizations to more hardware configurations, hinting that a solution might be on the horizon. However, they haven’t provided a specific timeline for when users can expect updates.
Updating drivers will be crucial, as their hardware already matches its competitors from previous generations in the latest gaming titles. While there haven’t been noticeable performance drops with the Arc B580 or B570 using the latest Intel and AMD CPUs, the struggle with older Intel CPUs was unexpected, to say the least.
We hope that, following these new updates, Intel can create a more competitive edge against AMD and NVIDIA GPUs. Yet, this doesn’t mean Intel will automatically gain significant traction in the GPU market. The limited availability of the Intel Arc Battlemage GPUs has already led to its diminished presence in the budget-friendly segment of the current GPU competition.
