NVIDIA recently announced their collaboration with Nintendo in developing a custom processor for the eagerly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2. They’ve promised that this new console boasts graphics capabilities that are ten times more powerful than its predecessor.
At the heart of this performance leap is an NVIDIA GPU outfitted with RT Cores and Tensor Cores, which collectively aim to push visual fidelity and AI-driven features to new heights. While the Tensor Cores are crafted to enhance AI-powered graphics efficiently, the RT Cores specialize in delivering realistic in-game details through dynamic lighting and intricate reflections.
Players using the handheld mode are in for a treat as NVIDIA G-SYNC comes into play, ensuring a seamless, tear-free gaming experience thanks to a variable refresh rate.
In a detailed blog post, the company shed more light on the development process behind the Nintendo Switch 2. They emphasized that it took the enormous effort of 1,000 engineer-years to perfect everything from the system and chip design to crafting a bespoke GPU, APIs, and top-tier development tools.
This next-gen console promises to support up to 4K gaming when docked, along with the ability to reach up to 120 frames per second at 1080p in handheld mode. Furthermore, it includes features like high dynamic range (HDR) and AI-assisted upscaling to enhance visual sharpness and smoothness during gameplay.
Continuing their detailed breakdown, NVIDIA elaborated that the new RT Cores will bring real-time ray tracing to games, introducing lifelike lighting, reflections, and shadows that create more immersive gaming worlds.
The Tensor Cores play a crucial role as well, powering features like Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS), which boosts resolution to achieve sharper image detail without compromising quality. They also enhance AI-driven functionalities, such as face tracking and background removal during video chats, making social gaming and streaming more interactive.
Set for a global retail launch on June 5, 2025, the Nintendo Switch 2 will be available at a price of £395.99, or $449.99.
