Ubisoft, the well-known French game publisher, is reportedly gearing up to launch a new battle royale game that aims to compete with Apex Legends.
According to Insider Gaming, this new venture, which goes by the codename “Scout,” has strong parallels with Respawn and EA’s popular game Apex Legends. In fact, some artwork from Scout was once used as a thumbnail for the project, hinting at these similarities. It appears that some of the characters in Scout might also bear a striking resemblance to those found in Apex Legends. The development of this game has been underway for quite some time.
The apparent strategy for Ubisoft is to draw away players from Apex Legends, especially since Electronic Arts has acknowledged a dip in the game’s financial performance. One source explained, “Their aim seems to be taking advantage of the declining player numbers in Apex. The thought at Ubisoft is that there’s a gap in the market for another hero-based battle royale.”
This isn’t Ubisoft’s first attempt at entering the free-to-play battle royale scene. They launched Hyperscape in 2020, though it only lasted 18 months before being discontinued. More recently, Ubisoft also decided to pull the plug on their free-to-play shooter XDefiant, which will conclude at the end of 2024.
Interestingly, fans of Apex Legends have something to look forward to as well. A new version, Apex Legends 2.0, is slated for release sometime post-April 2026.
