Man, where do I even start with this? Okay, so Respawn Entertainment just pulled the plug on a couple of their games. Did you catch that? It’s like they just hit the brakes and skidded to a stop. Oof. Anyway, one of these projects, surprise surprise, was some secretive Titanfall thing. Not much else about it—poof, gone. Oh, and they laid off a bunch of people too. Not just them, all over Electronic Arts. Sad times.
Okay, Respawn put out this sorta gloomy note on X (aka Twitter in its past life). They’re ditching two projects to focus on Apex Legends and their next Star Wars Jedi gig. Apparently, they’re trying to act like everything’s fine. Spoiler: it’s not really. They talked about “team adjustments,” fancy way of saying layoffs, right? They say they’re trying to help out those hit by the cuts, something about finding new gigs within EA. Sounds nice on paper.
Wild twist, a few hours after Respawn’s post, this guy Schreier from Bloomberg—kind of a big deal in the gaming news world—says EA is axing around 300 to 400 employees. Yikes. A chunk of them from, yep, you guessed it—Titanfall developers.
To top it off, here’s EA spokesman Justin Higgs coming in with corporate-speak about “strategic priorities” and “realigning resources.” Translation: budget cuts. I mean, what’s left to say?
Oh, and by the by, one of those canceled projects? Some Titanfall universe extraction shooter thingamajig. Guess that’s in the bin now. And that other mystery project? Already off the table earlier this year. It’s like, was it even real?
Anyway, Respawn’s still clinging to the Star Wars Jedi series and, of course, they’re giving Apex Legends a facelift. Honestly, in this industry, who knows what’ll happen next? It’s a bit of a rollercoaster, isn’t it?
